SNM Prom
Drake and I
Jennene and I
So every year the week before Thanksgiving Special Needs Mutual puts on a junior prom for all the special needs particpants. We as councilors and advisors are supposed to dress up and assist the kids in dancing and finding other friends to dance with. I love going to special needs junior prom because all the girls look so pretty and all the boys look there best! However, this year was way different! Drake and I got all dressed up and ready to go I could hardly wait. We went to the church an hour early so that I could help with hair and makeup for some of the girls from my class! We had a blast and we did all kinds of girly stuff!! Than I ran into one of my very special friends Jennene! We have been special needs friends for about two years now! It seems like we have known each other forever! She brought Drake and I a note that she wrote!(She is darling and she calls me like every day she takes her friendships very seriously and she loves and I mean loves Drake) She pulled Drake and I aside at the dance and asked us if we would be godparents to her future kids! I love Jennene I instantly said yes! (Drake however was not as excited he started frickin out I mean like WIGGIN OUT LITERALLY if you know Drake you know what i mean) So finally after talking to Drake and calming him down we decide that yes we would be godparents (although I dont think that is in are religon!)(Mind you Jennene is not even married yet and Drake is freakin out love the kid just don't suprise him) So Jennene goes on to say that the reason she picked us was because she knows that we are going to be good parents and that we would love her kids as our own if anything ever happened to her. She is so sweet and so precious! So after we read Jennene's note about being godparents and why she chose us! We hit the dance floor! If you know an kids with disabilities they love music and they are not afraid to dance and show how the music affects them! One of the must cool things that night was our moment of silence for Dwight! Dwight who was a particapant with SNM was a special child of our HEAVENLY FATHER! He got called home this week and he is now no longer with us! They had his funeral on Thursday so that night at prom we had a moment of silence! It was one of the most spiritual experiences! Every kid was quite and reflected on the life Dwight lived! We at SNM know that Dwight has a special mission on the other side and now his no longer in a body that restricts his talents and gifts! After that we danced and it was an amazing time the best prom I have ever gone to !!
SOME THINGS I HAVE LEARNED THIS YEAR IN SNM!
Friendships are so important and friends can last forever
Beautiful only applies to people who need to be told they are beautiful
Never judge a person by what they look like get to know them for who they are
We do not teach special needs kids they teach us
If you are looking for Christs example look at a special needs kid
Special needs friends always have good answers to all your problems
Be yourself let loose and express yourself to others they want that from you
At SNM they will love you for who you are they love the good and they love the bad!
If anyone wants to see the most wonderful and accepting group of people come to mutual!!
I have grown so much since I have attended SNM and honestly if I am ever lucky enought to have one myself I would love to! They have such a special spirits!
